SUMMARY:May 6th, 2013: AHPA to Honor 28 DPS Officers Killed in Line of Duty with Memorial Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:AHPA to Honor 28 DPS Officers Killed in Line of Duty with Memorial Ceremony Annual event will take place on Monday, May 6th (Phoenix, AZ) –The men and women of the Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA) will pay their respects to the 28 Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers who have been killed in the line of duty. The Annual DPS Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 6th at 9 A.M. This annual memorial, that arrives one week before the nationally recognized Police Memorial Week, not only honors the officers, but also the sacrifices of their families. This ceremony is a solemn reminder of the dangers DPS officers face every day as they protect and serve the State of Arizona. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), Arizona has lost 251 officers since its statehood.  Trends show most law enforcement deaths occurred primarily from gunfire or traffic accidents.  The NLEOMF will be adding five names from Arizona to the national memorial walls (in Washington) that were killed in the line of duty during 2011. Governor Janice Brewer, DPS Director Robert Halliday and AHPA President Jimmy Chavez will speak at the ceremony.  Special performances by aviation professionals, DPS officers singing the National Anthem and law enforcement bagpipers will add powerful sounds and visuals to the commemorative day. The ceremony will take place on May 6th at 9:00 a.m. at the DPS Officer Memorial Statue located at 2102 W. Encanto Boulevard in Phoenix.  Media is invited to attend. ### About the Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA): Founded in 1958, the AHPA's mission is to promote the positive role of Law Enforcement Professionals, and to protect and secure rights and benefits for their members through effective representation with local, state and national governments.  You can visit their website at www.ahpa.com. SUMMARY:ASU Basketball Benefiting AHPA - Jan. 26th
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Highway Patrol recognizes heroes involved in a recent cancelled Amber Alert (Tempe, Arizona) - It was Public Safety Day during Arizona State University’s basketball game on January 26th, where first responders received discounted tickets and were recognized during the game.  Firefighters and Highway Patrol officers faced-off in a three point shoot-out, where AHPA outscored fire 78-60. The Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA) honored three key Department of Public Safety (DPS) employees that helped cancel an Arizona Amber Alert on January 8th, 2013.  The fast-acting employees were recognized at Wells Fargo Arena during halftime. “These Arizona Highway Patrol Association members were heroic in recovering the teen,” stated Jimmy Chavez, President of the Arizona Highway Patrol Association.  “Today the young girl is home with her family because of these fine men and women from the Department of Public Safety.” AHPA honored: *Officer Henry Ross, the highway patrolman who located the Tempe girl and her abductor outside of Quartzsite. *Alane Gidel, intelligence research specialist who researched and disseminated accurate information to all law enforcement agencies. *Diane Greene, 9-1-1 dispatcher who assisted Officer Ross in recovering the Tempe girl. First responders received contributions from generous fans who attended the ASU Basketball game.  The total going to AHPA’s charity will be announced at our next meeting (February 20th).  Thank you to all the members who participated. ### [imagebrowser id=26] Watch the video from the 3 point shoot-out against fire here.  AHPA won 78-60! SUMMARY:F.J. "Skip" Fink, Jr.
DESCRIPTION: Officer Fink had just stopped an eastbound motorist on the Superstition Freeway (U.S. 60) near McClintock Drive, Tempe, when his patrol car was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Robert Stavers, 22, of Mesa. Upon impact, Officer Fink’s patrol car burst into flames, trapping the 28-year DPS veteran officer. Several people tried to rescue the DPS officer, who had not yet removed his seatbelt, from the flaming wreckage, but were unable to do so until they were able to douse the flames with personal extinguishers. The Miami native was pronounced dead about an hour later at the Maricopa County Hospital Burn Unit. Stavers was charged with second-degree murder, endangerment, possession and use of dangerous drugs, possession of marijuana, and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. In December 2000, Stravers pled guilty to a charge of manslaughter. On March 30th, 2001, Stravers was sentenced to 18 years in prison, the maximum allowable under the plea deal reached with Maricopa County prosecutors. Just two weeks short of his 28-year anniversary with the Department, Officer Fink had the most years of service among DPS/AHP officers killed in the line of duty.
